With general elections on the horizon, the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) is urging political parties and their supporters to uphold democratic values and demonstrate mutual respect throughout the campaign period.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the ECJ said the call comes amid rising reports of political paraphernalia—such as posters, banners, and flyers—being defaced, removed, or destroyed by individuals opposed to the candidates or parties they represent.
“This behaviour undermines the spirit of democracy and peaceful political engagement. We understand the passion that comes with political campaigning, but we must all remember that democracy thrives where there is mutual respect,” said ECJ Chairman Earl Jarrett.
The Office of the Political Ombudsman also weighed in, reminding parties and their supporters that every Jamaican has the right to participate in the political process without fear or intimidation. That includes the right to publicly display and promote their political affiliations without interference.
Political leaders were especially encouraged to set the tone for unity, tolerance, and restraint in their rhetoric and actions.
The Political Ombudsman’s office confirmed it will continue to monitor campaign activities and urged the public to report any violations of the Agreement and Declaration on Political Conduct.
Complaints can be submitted in writing via the online portal at www.ecj.com.jm (click on “Office of the Ombudsman Complaints Form”), emailed to ecjombudsman@eoj.com.jm, or delivered in person to the Office of the Political Ombudsman at 46 Duke Street, Kingston. The office can also be reached by phone at (876) 754-5845.
