The Governor of Brazil’s Roraima state, Antonio Olivério Garcia de Almeida, arrived in Guyana on Friday for a two-day official visit aimed at deepening cooperation between the two neighboring territories.
Governor Almeida met with President Dr. Irfaan Ali to discuss a range of strategic issues, including agriculture and livestock, energy, infrastructure development, technical exchanges, and private sector collaboration. The talks were geared towards enhancing regional trade, connectivity, and food and energy security.
The governor was accompanied by key members of his administration, including secretaries responsible for investment attraction, agriculture, communications, and military affairs, along with Roraima’s special envoy to Guyana and other senior officials.
During the meeting, the two sides explored several priority areas for cooperation. Among them was an agreement to intensify efforts to complete the second phase of the Linden-Lethem Road Project, which is expected to improve cross-border connectivity. They also discussed the development of a food and livestock processing hub in Lethem, aimed at boosting agricultural production and exports to the wider Caribbean.
In addition, the leaders proposed the creation of an integrated energy complex in Lethem through a public-private partnership. The facility would include infrastructure for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and other petroleum products. Scholarship and exchange programmes between tertiary institutions in Guyana and Roraima, with a focus on agriculture, research, and technology transfer, were also highlighted.
To facilitate the implementation of these initiatives, both sides agreed to establish a joint working group with defined objectives and timelines. The group will be tasked with advancing the discussed proposals and identifying new opportunities for collaboration between public and private stakeholders in both countries.
The visit marks a significant step forward in fostering regional integration and economic cooperation between Guyana and northern Brazil.
