Prime Minister Andrew Holness says Jamaica has recorded a consistent decline in murders over the past three years under the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration, while also making strides in economic recovery and infrastructure development.
Speaking at a JLP meeting in St Mary Western to recognize the contributions of longtime party workers, Holness said the current government has done what no other administration has achieved in the country’s history.
“There has never been a government in Jamaica’s history that could present a list of achievements to the people. Some people are reluctant to admit this, and there are those who will spin it in any way they can. But no one can deny that a seemingly intractable problem has been reduced not just by one year, but for three consecutive years,” he said.
“In 2023, the murder rate was reduced by 7.5%, or almost 8%. In 2024 we reduced the murder rates by 19 odd percent, or almost 20 percent. In 2025 we have reduced the murder rate by 44 percent. The first half of the year is almost over. We have put the nation on a solid track. Those who refuse to accept that are badminds. [We have] profoundly altered the life of this nation, and if this trajectory continues, a new Jamaica will emerge,” Holness added.
The prime minister also highlighted improvements in the country’s economy and resilience, particularly following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There is no doubt that we have improved our economy, and there is still more to come,” he said.
Holness pointed to the increase in the minimum wage and reductions in both unemployment and poverty. He said the government is now focused on ensuring those gains benefit families and communities across Jamaica.
“Now we need to focus on using dividends from those achievements to make sure that your local economy and household economy, for which you are the Minister of Finance, realize these dreams you have. We have allocated $45 Billion under the SPARK Programme and we are allocating 10 Billion this year for Water,” he said.
“These projects, in addition to the ones I have already done, will transform the lives of many communities,” Holness continued. “Holness said that five water projects worth $500 million will be implemented in your constituency.”
Closing his address, the prime minister encouraged JLP supporters to avoid negative campaigning and instead emphasize the administration’s performance.
“The Prime Minister further urged JLP supporters to not engage in a negative campaign for elections, but to be assertive and highlight the achievements of the JLP.”
