Grenada receives $5.3 million in aid from Saudi Arabia

Grenada has received a generous donation valued at 5.3 million XCD from the Government and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to aid in recovery efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl in July 2024. The donation, which includes 21 containers filled with essential supplies such as chainsaws, diesel generators, flashlights, first aid and hygiene kits, and emergency shelter materials, was officially presented to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell during a ceremony at the Port Authority Welcome Centre on Monday.

In his address, Prime Minister Mitchell expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We are deeply appreciative that, despite the challenges facing your region, you have shown such kindness and generosity to support us in this difficult time.” He emphasized that the aid is especially crucial for the people in the Grenadine Islands—Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—who endured severe hardship as a result of the hurricane’s destructive impact, a stark reminder of the growing effects of climate change.

Abdullah Muhammad Alsaihani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Venezuela, emphasized that “this humanitarian aid is designed not only to address immediate needs but also to strengthen the bond between our two nations.”

The aid, provided through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre’s international assistance program, will support affected communities by replenishing emergency shelter supplies, offering essential resources, and improving preparedness for future disasters.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell highlighted that the aid followed discussions at the CARICOM-Saudi Arabia Summit in November 2023, underscoring the growing partnership between CARICOM countries and Saudi Arabia.
