A French civil security helicopter, assisting Dominican authorities in the search for a missing aircraft, discovered the wreckage at 2:50 p.m. today, roughly 3 kilometers west of La Plaine. The aircraft had been missing since Sunday. The wreckage was located in a steep, challenging-to-reach area on the mountainside, and tragically, no signs of life were found near the crash site.
The 4-seater Cessna 172 departed Douglas-Charles airport just before 4 p.m. on Sunday, heading to Martinique, when communication was lost near the southeastern community of La Plaine. The aircraft’s owner, speaking to French radio, mentioned that the plane was “well equipped” but speculated that the adverse weather conditions in Dominica may have played a role in the crash. The island experienced heavy rains and strong winds over the weekend, which could have contributed to the tragic incident.
Dominican rescue operations commanders are actively coordinating with French teams on the ground to evaluate the situation and determine the next steps. State services in Martinique are on standby, ready to provide additional support and work in close collaboration with Dominican authorities.
Additional details about the four individuals aboard the aircraft reveal that the pilot, a 20-year-old male, was accompanied by a second pilot, his cousin, and a friend— all of whom were from Martinique.
Search and rescue operations will continue into Tuesday.
