Mayor of Kingston, Jamaica, Andrew Swaby announced that the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) will host a series of workshops aimed at applying the lessons and successes from Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street event to future large-scale events in the city.
Swaby made the announcement during the KSAMC’s first monthly meeting with councilors on January 13, 2025. He highlighted the positive economic impact of the event, noting a surge in tourist arrivals, with approximately 32,000 visitors arriving at Norman Manley International Airport in the week leading up to the December 31 event. Additionally, hotels and Airbnb accommodations in Kingston reached full capacity, benefiting various sectors including transportation, food, and entertainment.
“The KSAMC proudly welcomes events of this magnitude to Kingston, as their value to our city and economy is undeniable,” Swaby said.
“We stand ready to guide and support organizers throughout the planning process to ensure that such events are executed successfully. These initiatives not only showcase Kingston but also contribute meaningfully to the economic well-being of its residents.”

In the wake of Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street, the KSAMC conducted a debriefing session to review the outcomes and identify areas for improvement. Swaby emphasized that the insights from these sessions would inform the planning and execution of future events, ensuring greater efficiency and success.
The upcoming workshops, which will involve promoters, production crews, and venue operators, aim to establish clear standards for future events in Kingston. These workshops will also include discussions with smaller event promoters to ensure inclusivity and support for both large and small-scale events.
Swaby concluded by assuring that while the KSAMC is committed to maximizing the economic benefits of such events, the corporation remains focused on ensuring safety, order, and proper city management throughout the process. “We are not solely focused on revenue but are committed to the overall growth and development of the city,” he stated.
