KINGSTON, Jamaica — Netball Jamaica has unveiled its electrifying 15-member squad for the highly anticipated Sunshine Series against South Africa’s Spar Proteas.
The series, set to unfold at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston on January 18, 22, and 25, will see the Sunshine Girls defend their dominance while competing for the prestigious Margaret Beckford Trophy.
A stellar captain leads the charge
Reigning as World Number 3, the Sunshine Girls will once again be led by their ace defender and inspirational captain, Shamera Sterling Nembhard. Fresh off their triumphant Horizon Series victory over England, which earned them the inaugural Rhone Hornsby Trophy, the squad aims to carry forward their exceptional form. The team’s recent achievements have firmly solidified their global standing, with Jamaica maintaining a coveted spot among the top five in the world rankings, alongside Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa.
The 15-member roster promises a thrilling combination of experience and youthful vigor. The shooters’ line-up features Shimona Jok, making her eagerly awaited return, alongside standouts Shanice Beckford, Rhea Dixon, Mischa Creary, and Simone Gordon. The center court boasts versatile players such as Khadijah Williams and debutante Brie Grierson, who represents Nottingham Forest Netball in the English Super League and is eligible for Jamaica through her father.
The defensive line-up remains formidable, with captain Shamera Sterling Nembhard joined by the exceptional talents of Latanya Wilson, Jodi-Ann Ward, Theresa Beckford, and Kimone Shaw.
“Our defensive trio of Shamera, Jodi-Ann, and Latanya are exceptional, and we expect them to continue excelling,” lauded Head Coach Sasher-Gaye Henry.
Preparation and anticipation
Coach Henry exuded confidence in the squad’s readiness, noting their rigorous training regimen and strategic focus. “South Africa will not be an easy opponent,” she acknowledged. “The selectors have crafted a squad blending experience with emerging talent, which is vital as we look toward global tournaments in 2026 and 2027. Shimona’s return is a big boost, and we expect her to reinforce our circle dominance alongside Shanice, who was phenomenal during the Horizon Series.”
Captain Shamera Sterling Nembhard issued a heartfelt plea to Jamaican netball enthusiasts to rally behind the team. “The atmosphere during the Horizon Series was electrifying and gave us such a boost. We need our fans to come out in full force again, with their pot covers and all!” she said.
