Caribbean music heavyweights Skinny Fabulous and Machel Montano have joined forces for a powerful new single, Fallen Fetters, which honors those who have passed away while celebrating the resilience of those still embracing life.
The song, described by its creators as a heartfelt tribute, balances themes of remembrance and celebration. “We’ve been sitting on this song since April,” said Skinny Fabulous, the Vincentian Soca artist. He emphasized the importance of collaboration for projects with deep meaning, drawing parallels to his previous hit Famalay. “When it comes to these kinds of meaningful messages, I like to collaborate. The vessels through which we carry these messages are important, and the more diverse the vessels, the better,” he said.
Co-written by Jayorn “Krooshal” Richards, Kubiyashi, Rajiv Sutherland, and the artistes themselves, Fallen Fetters is paired with a visually evocative music video directed by Junior Lee. The creative direction, helmed by PreciseLee Films, captures the song’s dual message of honoring the departed while celebrating the living. Skinny praised the team’s work, saying, “I want to shout out Junior Lee for conceptualizing and directing an awesome video.”
The song carries a poignant reminder to cherish loved ones while they are still here. “We have to give people their flowers while they are still here. Too often, we wait until someone is gone to realize how much we love and miss them,” Skinny said.
The music video includes tributes to figures like Antiguan Soca artist Ricardo Drue, social media influencer Samara Maloney, and Miya Marcano, the daughter of DJ Eternal Vibes. While reflecting on loss, the video encourages viewers to celebrate life and embrace the joy of togetherness.
With Carnival 2025 approaching, Fallen Fetters underscores the importance of gratitude and celebration in the face of life’s uncertainties. “We are all just passing through, but while we’re here, sharing moments of laughter, fun, friendship, and love, may we never forget how much we have to be grateful for,” Skinny said.
The single stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to unite, heal, and inspire, solidifying Skinny Fabulous and Machel Montano’s roles as cultural ambassadors for the Caribbean.
