Khadija Shaw sparks dominant City win to keep title dreams alive

MANCHESTER, England — In a masterful display of power and precision, Jamaican star Khadija Shaw propelled Manchester City to a commanding 4-0 victory over Leicester City, keeping their Women’s Super League (WSL) title ambitions alive.

Shaw’s exceptional brace underpinned a scintillating team performance at the Academy Stadium, cutting through the icy winds with relentless determination.

City struck fear into Leicester’s defense almost immediately. Within just two minutes, Shaw leaped above her markers to nod home a pin-point cross from Kerstin Casparij, set up by a deft through-ball from Yui Hasegawa. The Jamaican striker’s commanding presence and aerial prowess were on full display, setting the tone for City’s dominance.

Not content with a single moment of brilliance, Shaw doubled her tally in the 29th minute. Rising high again, she powered home a sublime header from Leila Ouahabi’s precise delivery into the penalty area, leaving Leicester’s goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

City’s second-half surge

Despite freezing conditions, City showed no signs of slowing after halftime. The relentless attack continued, with Jess Park coolly adding a third in the 49th minute. Her composed strike from the edge of the box slipped past the diving keeper, further demoralizing Leicester.

The crescendo came in the 58th minute when Australian forward Mary Fowler delivered an acrobatic volley from close range, nestling the ball into the bottom corner. Fowler’s stunning finish sealed City’s emphatic win, which served as the perfect response to their earlier 2-0 defeat against Chelsea before the international break.

Title race intensifies

With this victory, Manchester City remain in hot pursuit of league leaders Chelsea, reducing the gap to five points. Chelsea, who dispatched Brighton in dominant fashion earlier, continue to set the pace, but Shaw’s brilliance and City’s cohesion signal a fierce fight ahead.

“We needed this performance,” said City manager Gareth Taylor. “Khadija was phenomenal, and the entire team played with intensity and focus. We’re back on track and determined to keep the pressure on.”

Shaw, hailed for her breath-taking contributions, expressed gratitude for her team’s efforts. “It’s all about the collective,” she said. “I’m happy to score, but what matters is how we played as a unit. We’re pushing for the title, and every game counts.”
