The City of Sunrise is on high alert as Hurricane Milton intensifies in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the latest advisories from the National Hurricane Center, Milton is expected to strengthen as it moves eastward, with a projected landfall on Florida’s west coast by Wednesday as a major hurricane.
A flood watch is in effect for Broward County until Thursday morning, with heavy rainfall and localized flooding expected as early as today. In response to the potential impact, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties, including Broward. Sunrise officials are urging residents to stay prepared and remain vigilant during the peak of hurricane season.
Sunrise Takes Action Ahead of Storm
The City of Sunrise has already activated its storm preparations. Utility staff have inspected and tested stormwater pump stations and generators, while clearing catch basin grates to ensure proper drainage. In coordination with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), canal levels have been lowered to provide additional storage for the anticipated rainfall. Emergency management teams are also working closely with county and state counterparts, with staff on standby for 24/7 response as needed.
Residents are advised to report any issues with roadways, drainage, or flooding to the Public Works Division at (954) 572-2388 during regular business hours, or at (954) 888-6087 after hours.
Reminders for Residents
Sunrise officials are reminding residents to refrain from placing bulk trash curbside, as debris can become hazardous projectiles in high winds. Republic Services will continue garbage and recycling collection as long as weather conditions allow, but service interruptions are possible as the storm progresses.
Homeowners associations are encouraged to clear overgrown vegetation and debris from catch basins and drainage systems to prevent blockages. While Sunrise is not a low-lying community, localized flooding is still a risk, particularly during periods of heavy rain. The city does not provide sandbags, as most rainwater will be captured in lakes and swales that are designed to drain slowly.
Emergency Kit Essentials
With hurricane season lasting until November 30, Sunrise officials urge residents to ensure their emergency kits are stocked with essential supplies, including:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days)
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Manual can opener
- Disposable cups, plates, and utensils
- First aid kit and prescription medications
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Cell phone chargers and backup batteries
- Cash or traveler’s checks
- Copies of important documents, such as birth certificates and insurance policies
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and monitor official channels for updates as Hurricane Milton approaches.
