Hurricane Beryl threatens Jamaica with intense weather conditions

As a hurricane warning persists for Jamaica, the island braces for imminent impacts from dangerously high water levels and exceptionally high waves within the next 36 hours.

Category 5 Hurricane Beryl continues to advance toward the central Caribbean.

Hurricane Beryl sustains average winds of at least 119 km/h (74 mph).

Reports are that as of 4:00 a.m., Hurricane Beryl’s center was located approximately 1,120 kilometers (695 miles) east-southeast of Kingston.

Forecast

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica predicts that while Hurricane Beryl may weaken later today, it is likely to remain near hurricane intensity as it moves across the central Caribbean, passing close to Jamaica on Wednesday. 

The current track forecasts the eye of Hurricane Beryl to skirt just southeast of Jamaica on Wednesday morning, tracking along the coastline thereafter.

Expected impact

Residents of Jamaica are advised to brace for heavy rainfall beginning early Wednesday, potentially escalating into hurricane-force winds across the island. 

Coastal areas, particularly in southern parishes, are expected to face storm surges and battering waves.
