Cricket West Indies (CWI) Academy endured a challenging day in the field as consistent batting from Emerging Ireland, led by captain Andy Balbirnie, enabled the hosts to establish a sizeable first-innings lead in their four-day match in Ireland on Wednesday.
The Caribbean side faced a tough task with the ball on the second day of the first-class match at Stormont. Balbirnie top-scored with 88, guiding a strong batting performance from the Irish, who reached 397 for seven at the close, leading by 197 runs.
The CWI Academy bowlers met significant resistance from the Irish line-up, which included several players who participated in the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States or had previous international Test experience.
In response to the visitors’ first-innings total of exactly 200, the Emerging Ireland batsmen capitalized on the opportunity. Andy McBrine scored 65, Fionn Hand remained unbeaten on 61, opener James McCollum made 40, T20 World Cup captain Paul Stirling added 32, and Curtis Campher contributed 25.
Pick of the bowlers
CWI Academy captain Teddy Bishop took two for 35 from eight overs, while left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop was the pick of the bowlers with two for 72 from 31 overs.
The visitors endured a tough initiation, only managing to claim one wicket before Emerging Ireland reached 147 for one at lunch after rain delayed the start by half an hour. The home team resumed from their overnight total of 18 without loss.
Barbadian left-arm pacer Ramon Simmonds made the breakthrough for the Caribbean side, trapping McCollum lbw in the final half-hour before the interval, following a 119-run opening partnership with Balbirnie.
Post-lunch, the visitors found more success, but the Irish continued to score freely, reaching 264 for six at tea. International Test batsmen Balbirnie, Harry Tector, Campher, Lorcan Tucker, and Stirling gifted their wickets in attempts to bolster the total.
Joshua Bishop trapped Balbirnie lbw after a 54-run stand with Campher for the second wicket, and pacer Johann Layne, the CWI Academy bowling hero from the first match, dismissed Tector for eight.
CWI Academy bowlers struggled
The two Bishops combined to remove Campher, and Antiguan pacer Kelvin Pitman caught Tucker behind for one three overs later before Teddy Bishop trapped Stirling lbw in the last half-hour before the break.
After tea, the CWI Academy bowlers struggled as conditions improved, and McBrine and Hand capitalized, each scoring resolute half-centuries. They put on a crucial 109-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Teddy Bishop eventually broke the stand in the final hour of play, trapping McBrine lbw. However, Liam McCarthy, unbeaten on 18, came to the crease and batted through the final 20 minutes, ensuring the visitors spent the entire day in the field.
CWI Academy trails 1-0 in the two-match series after Emerging Ireland secured a 72-run victory in the first match, which concluded last Friday at the Green. The series is part of a reciprocal agreement between Cricket Ireland and CWI, following Emerging Ireland’s tour of the Caribbean in November-December last year.
