A six-year-old girl is currently hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head while sleeping in her bed in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Guyana.
The incident occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
Investigation underway
Authorities have conducted several interviews and forensic tests in the wake of the shooting.
Both parents of the victim were tested for gunshot residue, and although several people have been questioned, none have provided information pertinent to the case.
Reports indicate that witnesses did not hear any gunshots at the time of the incident.
Scene examination
Police investigations have uncovered a bullet hole in the vicinity of the child’s bed, suggesting the shot was fired from outside the home.
Observations at the scene noted reddish stains, believed to be blood, on the bed, though no spent shell was found in or around the house.
This lack of evidence complicates the efforts to understand the sequence of events that led to this horrific act.
Family’s night of horror
The child’s mother recounted the terrifying discovery she made early Sunday morning.
After hearing her daughter groaning, she found the young girl with her head and clothing soaked in a blood-like substance.
Reports are that the parents quickly rushed their daughter to Georgetown Public Hospital.
