Emerging talent and experience combine in West Indies squad for England tour

Former captain Jason Holder has earned a Test recall as West Indies named a 15-man squad for their upcoming Test tour of England, starting at Lord’s on July 10. Holder joins a robust pace attack featuring vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, and breakout star Shamar Joseph.

In a notable move, highly-rated 19-year-old fast bowler Isai Thorne will travel with the squad in a development role, underscoring Cricket West Indies’ commitment to nurturing young talent.

The selectors have opted for changes in the batting line-up, with opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul omitted after his struggles against Australia. In his place, youngster Mikyle Louis has been included. Louis, 23, is the top-scorer in domestic first-class cricket for the Leeward Island Hurricanes, amassing 682 runs at an average of 48.71. Should he make his debut, Louis would become the first player from St Kitts to represent the West Indies.

Kraigg Brathwaite will continue to lead the side, aiming to defend the Richards-Botham Trophy after being named Player of the Series during the West Indies’ home win in 2022.

A strong balance

“The squad has been shaped with experience and emerging talent, ensuring a strong balance as we face the challenge of playing in English conditions,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “Over the past year, our red-ball program has continued to develop. Following our victory in the last Test in Australia in January, it is evident that we are seeing the fruits of that investment.”

“Each player selected has earned their place through consistent performances and hard work. We are confident that this blend of seasoned players and emerging faces will perform admirably against England.”

The West Indies will look to build on their recent successes and leverage their diverse squad to tackle the formidable English side in their home conditions.

West Indies Test Squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Alick Athanaze, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Jason Holder, Kavem Hodge, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph (vc), Shamar Joseph, Mikyle Louis, Zachary McCaskie, Kirk McKenzie, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Kevin Sinclair.
