In a tough outing at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, the Reggae Girlz of Jamaica succumbed to a 4-0 defeat against Brazil in the first of their two-game friendly series on Saturday.
Brazil’s star forward Marta was the standout performer, netting two second-half goals to lead her team to a convincing victory.
The match served as an opportunity for Brazil to exact some measure of revenge after being eliminated in the group stage of last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup by Jamaica, following a goalless draw in Australia.
Jamaica faced significant challenges from the onset, compounded by the absence of stand-in captain Allyson Swaby, who was ruled out before the game. The Reggae Girlz found themselves trailing early when Adriana opened the scoring for Brazil in the 26th minute. The situation worsened for Jamaica when Chantelle Swaby inadvertently scored an own goal in the 38th minute, putting Brazil firmly in control with a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Disallowed goals
Both teams experienced frustration with disallowed goals in the first half, but Brazil managed to capitalize on their opportunities more effectively.
The second half saw Brazil’s legendary forward Marta take center stage. In the 64th minute, Marta demonstrated her clinical finishing by beating Jamaican goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer at the near right post, extending Brazil’s lead to 3-0. She capped off her impressive performance in the 90th minute with a spectacular solo effort. Marta danced past two defenders before launching a powerful shot into the far top corner of the goal, sealing Brazil’s 4-0 victory.
The Reggae Girlz will have an opportunity to regroup and seek redemption when they face Brazil again on Tuesday in Salvador. This friendly series is crucial for both teams as they prepare for upcoming international competitions, including Brazil’s preparations for the Paris Olympic Games.
Despite the loss, the Reggae Girlz will be looking to improve their performance in the upcoming match, aiming to build on their experiences and strengthen their squad for future challenges.
