Eight Haitians, believed to be part of a group that landed illegally in Jamaica at a beach in Hector’s River, Portland, late Sunday night, are in police custody.
The details surrounding their apprehension are scarce, but it is understood that they were picked up at various locations in Hector’s River during a pre-dawn police operation.
Transport for medical check-up
A police pick-up truck was observed transporting the detained Haitians to the Port Antonio Hospital, approximately 26 miles away, for medical treatment and check-ups shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday.
Authorities are still uncertain about the total number of Haitians who landed and whether any remain at large.
Previous incident in January
This incident mirrors a similar occurrence in January when 10 Haitians, found along a roadway in Hector’s River, Portland, were sent home less than eight hours after receiving medical treatment.
