Jamaican-American Commissioner Marlon Bolton has been honored with the 2024 Home Rule Hero Award by the Florida League of Cities (FLC) for his steadfast dedication to representing the City of Tamarac and defending the home rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2024 legislative session.
Home rule, which allows cities to manage local issues with minimal state interference, is a cornerstone of local governance. Commissioner Bolton, along with other honorees, worked tirelessly throughout the legislative session to ensure local voices could make local decisions, safeguard the Home Rule powers of Florida’s municipalities, and advance the League’s legislative priorities.
“I am humbled and grateful to receive this award,” said Commissioner Bolton.
“As a local official, I believe it is essential to protect the home rule powers that allow us to serve our communities effectively. I will continue to advocate for the interests of Tamarac and all Florida cities, ensuring we can address local issues and make decisions that benefit our residents.”
Impactful work in Tamarac
Bolton made history in 2016 by becoming Tamarac’s first Black commissioner. During his time on the commission, he has championed a city ordinance granting low-income seniors an additional $25,000 tax exemption, advocated for first-time homebuyer grants, supported home rehabilitation programs, and introduced the First Light Up the East event, the city’s first major event on the east side in over 57 years.
In 2019, Marlon Bolton became Tamarac’s first Caribbean and African American Vice Mayor, unanimously elected by a 5-0 vote.
Commissioner Bolton’s relentless efforts have significantly impacted the City of Tamarac and the state of Florida. His dedication to protecting home rule powers ensures that local governments can effectively address the unique needs of their communities.
“The dedication and effort of these local officials who tirelessly advocated for local decision-making made a real difference this legislative session,” said FLC Chief of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “On behalf of the League and its legislative team, we’re proud to recognize each of them and thank them for their service.”
