Barbados is mourning the loss of former President of the Barbados Football Association, George Las Caris, who passed away at the age of 70 after battling cancer.
Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw led tributes to Las Caris, highlighting his significant contributions to football and youth development in the country.
Las Caris, a towering figure both on the football field and in the community, dedicated almost half a century to teaching and mentoring Barbadian youths. As a teacher by profession, he impacted the lives of many students at Christ Church Foundation School and the Barbados Community College, leaving a lasting legacy of firmness and fairness.
In addition to his role as a teacher, Las Caris served four terms as President of the Barbados Football Association, beginning in 1987. He was instrumental in modernizing football in Barbados and promoting its commercial value, emphasizing the importance of sponsorship and investment in youth development.
The Barbados Cup international junior football tournament
One of Las Caris’ most significant contributions was the establishment of the Barbados Cup international junior football tournament over 30 years ago. This tournament provided a platform for young footballers to showcase their talents and contributed to the growth and development of the sport in Barbados.
Current BFA and Caribbean Football Union President Randy Harris praised Las Caris as one of the most progressive administrators of football in Barbados. Under his leadership, local football experienced transformation and expansion, with increased participation, sponsorship, and the introduction of new competitions.
Las Caris leaves behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the sport he loved. His wife, Margo, and two sons, Chae and Luke, survive him. As Barbados honors his memory, Las Caris’ contributions to football and youth development will continue to inspire future generations.
