Former West Indies cricketer Devon Thomas faced a significant setback in his career as he was handed a five-year ban from the sport after admitting to seven anti-corruption breaches.
The ban, announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC), follows Thomas’s admission to violating the anti-corruption codes of Sri Lanka Cricket, the Emirates Cricket Board, and the Caribbean Premier League.
The 34-year-old Antiguan, known for his role as a wicketkeeper-batsman and occasional pace bowler, confessed to engaging in activities aimed at fixing match outcomes during the 2021 Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 tournament. Additionally, Thomas acknowledged failing to report illegal approaches during the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament and 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20, as well as obstructing investigations into these incidents.
The severity of Thomas’s actions
Alex Marshall, ICC’s General Manager of the Integrity Unit, emphasized the severity of Thomas’s actions, stating, “This ban is apt and should send a strong message to players that attempt to corrupt our sport will be dealt with firmly.” The ban, effective from May 23 last year when Thomas was provisionally suspended, includes a backdating clause, with the final 18 months suspended pending his cooperation with ongoing investigations and a commitment to refrain from further offenses.
Of the seven breaches, four were linked to matches in the LPL, while one each pertained to the Abu Dhabi T10 and CPL tournaments. Marshall highlighted Thomas’s familiarity with anti-corruption protocols due to his extensive experience in international and professional domestic cricket, noting his failure to fulfil these obligations across multiple franchise leagues.
Thomas, who made his international debut 15 years ago, has represented the West Indies in 21 One-Day Internationals and 12 Twenty20 Internationals. Despite a sporadic international career, highlighted by a solitary Test appearance against Australia in December 2022, Thomas’s involvement in anti-corruption violations has tarnished his reputation and led to a significant suspension from the sport.
