In yet another crackdown on crime, authorities have apprehended a group of seven theft suspects linked to a series of burglaries targeting the homes of Asian business owners.
This surge in criminal activity has prompted heightened vigilance, leading to similar arrests in South Florida.
Revealed by the police on Wednesday, the apprehension of these seven suspects took place back in December, as per WPTV reports.
The initial thread of investigation unraveled in November following a burglary incident at a residence in Port St. Lucie.
The perpetrators made away with a safe, $10,000 in cash, and various pieces of jewelry.
Unraveling the operation
Surveillance footage captured the suspects in action on November 27, prompting a concerted effort by law enforcement.
With the aid of a witness, investigators managed to identify some of the vehicles used in the crime.
Subsequently, on December 5, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Burglary Apprehension Team initiated surveillance on several vehicles, one of which was linked to the Port St. Lucie burglary.
Coordinated operation
Detectives observed the suspects conducting a burglary in Doral, where three individuals forcibly entered a home while their accomplice waited as a driver.
Three other suspects were stationed as lookouts within the neighborhood. The coordinated efforts of law enforcement led to the arrest of all seven suspects following the burglary.
Profile of a suspect
Among the apprehended individuals is 20-year-old Angel Alejandro Rojas-Morales, hailing from Colombia. Rojas-Morales had illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico in 2023.
He faces an array of charges, including burglary, grand theft, and criminal mischief.
Currently incarcerated in St. Lucie County, he remains under immigration hold, as per jail records.
Heightened vigilance
Police Chief Richard Del Toro emphasized that Port St. Lucie is not exempt from the broader national issue of illegal immigration, which often results in innocent citizens falling victim to crime.
He pledged the relentless pursuit of justice for victims of such crimes.
Modus operandi unveiled
Rojas-Morales is purportedly part of a Colombian South American Theft Group (SATG), specializing in targeting residences of Asian business owners during their absence.
The group employs sophisticated tactics, including counter surveillance, hidden GPS trackers, concealed video surveillance cameras, and radio jammers to disrupt police communications during their operations.
Parallel investigations
This latest arrest comes in the wake of similar actions taken by Coral Springs Police in March.
According to reports, the suspects arrested in Coral Springs included six men and one woman who are from Colombia and Mexico.
The crew was implicated in approximately 10 burglaries across Broward and Palm Beach counties in the fortnight leading up to their arrests.
Condemnation and resolve
Expressing indignation, Coral Springs Police Chief Bradley McKeone denounced the targeted nature of these crimes against hardworking individuals.
He underscored the severity of such offenses, which not only jeopardize livelihoods but also disrupt businesses and communities.
