Stellar performances keep KC, Edwin Allen ahead in ISSA/GraceKennedy Championships

Defending champions Kingston College (KC) and former girls’ champions Edwin Allen High asserted their dominance on the fourth day of the 2024 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, maintaining narrow leads in the competition at the National Stadium.

In the boys’ category, KC leads with 118 points, closely followed by Jamaica College (JC) with 112 points. Calabar, St Jago, and Excelsior round out the top five positions.

Meanwhile, Edwin Allen continues to dominate the girls’ competition with 109 points, leading defending champions Hydel by 12 points. St Jago, Immaculate Conception, and Wolmer’s Girls follow closely behind.

Sashana Johnson of Hydel impressed in the Class Three 400m, clocking a personal best of 54.59 seconds to secure victory. Abigail Campbell of Hydel also shone in Class One, winning in a personal best time of 52.27 seconds.

It’s a great feeling

Quoting Campbell after her win, she said, “I am thrilled to have won and to have achieved a personal best time. It’s a great feeling.”

Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas maintained her unbeaten record by winning the Class Two 400m in a swift 53.03 seconds.

In the boys’ events, St Jago’s Rushaine Richards clinched victory in the Class Three 400m with a personal best of 49.54 seconds.

Excelsior High pulled off an upset in the Class Two boys’ 400m, with Demarco Bennett racing to victory in 46.91 seconds.

Maximum points

Marchino Rose led KC to maximum points in the Class One boys’ 400m, winning in a personal best time of 45.93 seconds.

Zavien Bernard of Hydel High broke the Class Three high jump record, clearing the bar at 1.83 meters.

Ishani Armstrong of St Catherine High won gold in the Class Four long jump with a distance of 5.25 meters.

The competition continues with semi-finals in the 200m and 800m events on Friday, with finals in the 4x100m relay scheduled for tomorrow.
