How safe is your phone number? The alarming truth behind the surge in robocalls

In an era where digital communication is ever-present, the phenomenon of robocalls has escalated into a significant nuisance. These illegal robocalls are not just a mere annoyance; they often serve as the front for various scams. A question that nags many is: How do these companies get hold of personal phone numbers?

How your number is acquired

It turns out that the method of acquiring these numbers is not always as random as one might think.

In some cases, companies engage in deceptive practices to harvest personal information, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

A recent case involves Response Tree LLC, a lead generation company. This revelation came to light in a settlement announced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

FTC shared that Individuals seeking mortgage refinancing quotes entrusted Response Tree LLC with their names and numbers, only to have their information sold to telemarketers.

These telemarketers then bombarded them with illegal robocalls, peddling everything from fraudulent auto warranties to solar panels, and even Social Security disability services.

Strategies to shield yourself from robocalls and scams

To combat this growing issue, there are several proactive steps one can take:

  • Guard your personal information: FTC advises that people exercise caution when entering personal details online. Conduct thorough research on the website, searching for any combination of the site’s name with terms like “complaint”, “review”, or “scam”.
  • Always read the fine print: Beware of websites that have inconspicuous disclaimers. These often state that by clicking a link or checking a box, you consent to your information being collected and sold.
  • Know your rights: It is important to recognize that any robocall attempting to sell you something is illegal without your explicit written permission.
  • Report illegal robocalls: Your reports are crucial. FTC says they aid law enforcement and investigators in curtailing illegal robocalls. Report such incidents at DoNotCall.gov.

Additional resources and initiatives

For more detailed advice on handling unwanted calls, the FTC’s website at ftc.gov/calls offers extensive guidance.

The FTC is also leading an initiative named Operation Stop Scam Calls. This joint effort with federal and state law enforcement partners signifies a determined stride in the fight against the robocall epidemic.
