The serenity of New Year’s Day was shattered at Bayside Marketplace when a group of teenagers engaged in a violent altercation, prompting the swift intervention of Miami police.
The incident unfolded shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
Fireworks ignite panic
Reports are that law enforcement responded to frantic calls reporting a riotous scene at the shopping center located at 401 Biscayne Boulevard.
According to the Miami Police Department, teenagers were allegedly setting off loud fireworks, plunging the mall into chaos, and causing substantial disruption and damage to local businesses.
Police mobilization and mall closure
Social media posts showcased a massive police presence at the scene, with numerous officers rushing to restore order.
Several officers escorted the teens out of the mall and Biscayne Boulevard was shut down between 2nd and 4th Streets as officers attempted to clear the area.
Biscayne Boulevard later reopened.
Violent confrontation unfolds
As the situation seemed to be improving, police officers encountered a separate incident involving 10 to 15 juveniles actively assaulting a man in the vicinity of Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southeast 2nd Street, as detailed in the arrest report.
In a bid to restore order, the police issued a stern warning through a marked vehicle’s announcement system, urging the assailants to disperse and cease the violence.
However, several teenagers opted to flee the scene.
Arrests and stolen property
In the aftermath, Miami police successfully apprehended and detained four young males involved in the altercation.
Among them were two 15-year-olds, one 14-year-old, and one 16-year-old, all of whom were positively identified by the alleged victim. According to the victim’s account, he was driving west on Southeast 2nd Street when he encountered the large group of teenagers.
One of them threw an object, believed to be a bottle, which struck his vehicle’s passenger side. The ensuing confrontation escalated, resulting in the victim being assaulted by several males.
Reports are that the teens also entered his vehicle and stole the man’s blue iPhone 13 Pro Max from his center console.
Legal consequences
As a result of this disruptive incident, two of the arrested teenagers face multiple charges, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, grand theft, battery, and resisting an officer without violence. The remaining two teenagers were also taken into custody for resisting an officer without violence.
