Heimir Hallgrimsson, the head coach of Jamaica’s Senior National Football team, commended Jamaica’s fringe players for their dedicated performance in a goalless draw against Guatemala during an international friendly match on Saturday.
The match took place at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, primarily attended by Guatemalan supporters, and neither team managed to breach the opponent’s defense.
Hallgrimsson acknowledged that the game might not have been the most exciting, with few goal-scoring opportunities, but he credited Jamaica’s players for their effort. He highlighted Guatemala’s agility and prowess in counter-pressing, recalling their encounters during the Gold Cup, where Jamaica struggled against their high-intensity style of play.
Contentment with the team’s performance
Despite the limited goal-scoring chances, Hallgrimsson expressed contentment with the team’s performance, stating, “We can be quite happy even though we didn’t create a whole lot of goal-scoring chances.”
The coach revealed that the match was not originally part of their planned calendar for the year. Instead, it was arranged by the Jamaica Football Federation, causing some distraction for the coaching staff. They are now focused on the crucial two-game series against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final, which serves as a qualifier for the 2024 Copa America.
Hallgrimsson explained that the friendly was an opportunity to assess players based in the United States, as January is when they concentrate on domestic players. They aimed to minimize expenses for this match, focusing on players located near the arena or within the US, rather than bringing in players from distant locations like England.
Most significant threat
During the game, left-sided attacker Deshane Beckford posed the most significant threat for Jamaica before being substituted late in the second half. Despite not being a planned fixture, Hallgrimsson believed that the match benefitted both players and the coaching staff. It allowed him to gain insights into the players’ capabilities and introduced the players to the coaching systems.
Hallgrimsson also emphasized the importance of balancing player selection for different levels of competition. Some games are used to assess players and provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills, while others, especially official international matches, are focused on winning. Proper planning ensures a seamless balance between the two aspects.
