Justin Greaves’ impressive unbeaten 95 guided Leeward Islands Hurricanes to a crucial four-wicket win over Barbados Pride in the Super50 Cup, putting the Hurricanes in a strong position to secure a semi-final spot.
Chasing a revised target of 192, Hurricanes reached their goal with 11 balls to spare, thanks to Greaves’ stellar performance at the Brian Lara Stadium on Friday.
Barbados Pride had posted a total of 196 after being dismissed in the 42nd over, with Captain Shai Hope (55) and Roston Chase (45) providing significant contributions. However, their innings was disrupted by rain, resulting in a revised target for the Hurricanes.
First player in the tournament to surpass the 300-run mark
Greaves was the standout performer for the Hurricanes, scoring an unbeaten 95 from 120 deliveries. This innings made him the first player in the tournament to surpass the 300-run mark, with a total of 328 runs.
Greaves anchored the chase, forming key partnerships with Keacy Carty (18) and Terrance Warde (22). The late flourish from Hayden Walsh, who scored an unbeaten 21 from nine balls, ensured Hurricanes crossed the finish line.
In response, Shai Hope and Roston Chase had stabilized the Pride’s innings with an 85-run partnership after an early wobble. However, the dismissal of these key batsmen changed the momentum, and the Pride struggled to accelerate their scoring.
Joseph, Walsh pick of the bowlers
Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph (3-34) and leg-spinner Hayden Walsh (3-43) were the pick of the Hurricanes’ bowlers, leading the attack effectively.
The win marked the third victory for the Hurricanes, propelling them to the top of the table with 42 points. Trinidad and Tobago Red Force is second with 40 points, while Barbados Pride (37) and West Indies Academy (31) currently occupy the other semi-final spots.
Despite the win, Joseph highlighted the need for improvement in their performance, emphasizing the importance of finishing games earlier.
