UN Security Council extends one-year sanctions on Haiti 

The United Nations Security Council has approved the one-year renewal of the sanctions regime targeting Haiti

These sanctions, including a targeted arms embargo, travel restrictions, and asset freezes, were initially established in October of the previous year to address the prevailing issues of widespread violence, criminal activity, and human rights abuses afflicting the nation.

Renewed commitment to tackle Haiti’s challenges

The Security Council’s resolution calls for an immediate and complete cessation of various forms of violence and abuse that have taken a heavy toll on Haiti’s population. These include kidnappings, sexual and gender-based violence, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, homicides, extrajudicial killings, and the recruitment of children into armed groups and criminal networks.

Sanctions targeting complicity and instigators

The Security Council asserts that the individuals and entities designated for sanctions bear direct or indirect responsibility for actions that undermine the peace, security, or stability of Haiti.
