Jamaica’s People’s National Party (PNP) has removed councillor caretaker Tyrone Guthrie from his provisional title following charges of forcible rape and abduction of a 16-year-old girl.
The allegations against Guthrie, who held responsibility for the Friendship Division in Westmoreland, have been described by the opposition party as “deeply troubling and unacceptable.”
Party stands against sexual violence
PNP expressed its firm stance against all forms of sexual violence and sexual abuse in the wake of the serious accusations leveled against Guthrie.
The charges stem from an incident that reportedly occurred in June, wherein a 16-year-old female student was allegedly raped at Guthrie’s residence.
The opposition party acknowledged the quick response by the police leading to Guthrie turning himself in.
The PNP emphasized that justice must be served and due process should be followed to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the accusations.
