Today, Haitians around the world are not only observing New Year’s Day, they’re also celebrating Haiti’s Independence Day.
Haiti’s official day of independence from its French colonizers was on January 1, 1804. To commemorate, traditionally each year Haitians across the country and the world, consume the famous Haitian Soup Joumou. This is a meal that slaves were once forbidden to eat by the French ruling class.
The soup is said to symbolize freedom, and celebrate Haiti as the world’s first successful slave revolution and subsequent independent nation. Though the ingredients for Soup Joumou may vary, its squash or pumpkin base always remains the same.
