Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy again but vows to keep flying

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines announced Friday that it has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year, but emphasized that flights will continue to operate and tickets remain on sale.

The Florida-based airline first entered bankruptcy proceedings in November 2024 before striking a restructuring deal in March that trimmed nearly $800 million in debt. Spirit now says the renewed Chapter 11 filing will allow it to “double down” on efforts to redesign its network, streamline its fleet, and cut costs while it negotiates with creditors and lessors.

“Guests can rely on Spirit for high-value travel and to connect them to the people and places they care about most,” CEO Dave Davis, who took over in April after the departure of Ted Christie, said in a statement. Davis, a former Sun Country Airlines executive, is leading the company’s latest turnaround attempt.

Spirit has long positioned itself as a low-cost option in the U.S. and Caribbean markets, with frequent flights linking Florida hubs such as Fort Lauderdale and Orlando to destinations across Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean islands. Its ultra-low fares helped expand access to leisure travel for many passengers in the region, though the carrier has also faced criticism over fees and customer service.

The airline’s troubles come despite growth in market share following the pandemic recovery, when demand for leisure travel surged. Spirit has faced intensifying competition from major U.S. carriers and fellow low-cost rivals such as Frontier Airlines. Frontier tried to merge with Spirit in 2022 in a $2.9 billion deal, but JetBlue countered with a richer offer. Both attempts collapsed after regulators raised antitrust concerns.

The latest bankruptcy filing highlights the challenges facing discount carriers in an industry where high fuel prices, labor costs, and fare wars have eroded profits. For Caribbean travelers, Spirit’s next steps will be closely watched, as the airline plays a significant role in budget-friendly airlift to the region.
