Sangster International Airport in Jamaica has ushered in a new era of passenger convenience with the activation of six electronic immigration gates.
Installed at the outset of the winter tourist season in December, these e-gates officially commenced operations last week, marking a significant milestone for Jamaica’s busiest airport.
Enhancing efficiency through innovative technology
The introduction of these electronic immigration gates signals a remarkable leap forward in airport technology, effectively eliminating the necessity for immigration officers to be stationed at the frontline.
In their place, state-of-the-art facial recognition technology has been deployed to facilitate seamless traveler processing, resulting in a reduction in wait times and an overall enhancement of passenger flow.
Facial recognition takes center stage
One of the standout features of the newly operational e-gates is their utilization of facial recognition technology.
This innovative approach not only expedites the immigration process but also contributes to a hassle-free travel experience for passengers.
Sangster’s surge in passenger arrivals
The deployment of these advanced e-gates is particularly timely, coinciding with a significant upsurge in passenger arrivals at Sangster International Airport.
According to reports from MBJ Airports Limited, the entity responsible for operating the airport, December 2023 witnessed an impressive 13 per cent increase in traffic compared to the same period in 2022.
An astounding half a million passengers passed through the airport in December alone.
Anticipating continued success
There is anticipation that the winter season will continue to attract high passenger volumes.
This trend is expected to persist throughout the terminal and airport, promising a robust January-to-March period, setting the stage for a successful year ahead.
