Direct Nassau-Montego Bay flights driving regional tourism growth

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has welcomed the continued growth in tourism between Nassau, The Bahamas, and Montego Bay, Jamaica, following the successful launch of Bahamasair’s direct twice-weekly service in November 2024.

Since the inaugural flight landed at Sangster International Airport seven months ago, the route has seen a steady increase in visitor traffic. Jamaica recorded 3,092 arrivals from Nassau and 3,074 departures to The Bahamas, underscoring the strong demand for seamless regional travel between two of the Caribbean’s most prominent tourism destinations.

“The success of this route demonstrates the tremendous potential for intra-Caribbean travel when we remove barriers and create convenient connections,” Minister Bartlett said. “Nassau visitors are discovering the unique attractions of western Jamaica, from our pristine beaches to our rich cultural heritage while Jamaicans now can explore the unique features of the islands of The Bahamas. The new route also provides economic benefits for both countries through increased visitor spend,” he added.

Search interest for travel to Jamaica has surged since the route’s launch, pointing to growing momentum over the next three months. Jamaica currently holds the largest share of Caribbean destination searches from The Bahamas, outpacing destinations like the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and St. Lucia.

Director of Tourism, Donovan White, emphasized the broader impact of the direct service. “The direct link has facilitated deeper cultural and business relationships between Jamaica and The Bahamas which exemplifies successful intra-Caribbean collaboration. This is more than just a flight route – it’s a bridge connecting our Caribbean family,” he said.

The 1 hour and 25-minute flight, operating on Thursdays and Sundays, has eliminated the need for extended layovers through the U.S. or other international hubs. The increase in visitor spending is expected to deliver a substantial economic boost to businesses across both countries, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators.

During a recent visit to The Bahamas by the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), Bahamasair Chairman Tanya Pratt highlighted the spirit of regional unity. “The Caribbean is strongest when we move forward together. This isn’t just a visit, it’s a celebration of shared values, family, and vision. What we’re building today will have lasting ripple effects,” she said.

Echoing this sentiment, Bahamasair’s Deputy Managing Director Shevonn Cambridge noted that the airline sees airlift as “not just about transportation, it’s about connection.” He also extended thanks to the JTB for its collaboration and support in developing a new model for regional partnership.

To deepen the relationship and promote the route, Bahamasair and the JTB launched reciprocal immersive experiences to help each team better understand the unique offerings of both destinations. The initiative was designed to inspire stronger cooperation in marketing and development.

The new service is drawing interest from both leisure travelers seeking multi-destination Caribbean experiences and business travelers aiming to strengthen commercial ties. The JTB remains committed to working with Bahamasair to enhance connectivity and support the region’s broader tourism ambitions.
