In a display of dominance, Captain Hayley Matthews delivered a spectacular performance to guide West Indies Women to a comprehensive 88-run victory over Pakistan Women, completing a series whitewash with a sensational showing at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.
Opting to bat first, Matthews showcased her batting prowess with an outstanding knock, smashing an impressive 141 runs off 149 deliveries to propel her side to a formidable total of 278 for six in their allotted 50 overs.
Supported by former captain Stafanie Taylor’s 47 and vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle’s 38, Matthews orchestrated crucial partnerships that propelled West Indies Women to their second 250-plus total of the series.
Remarkable contribution extended beyond her batting prowess
The West Indies skipper’s remarkable contribution extended beyond her batting prowess, as she also made significant inroads with her off-spin, claiming two wickets for 26 runs to help restrict Pakistan Women to 190 all out in the 48th over.
Matthews’s exceptional performance throughout the series earned her the well-deserved accolades of Player-of-the-Match and Player-of-the-Series. Reflecting on her team’s dominant display, Matthews expressed satisfaction with their performance.
“Our goal in this series was to come out here and try to get six [ICC Championship] points so we’re really happy that as a group we were able to come out here and do that,” Matthews remarked.
19 boundaries
“And on top of that, the way we were able to win the games – how convincing it was – just adds something else onto it as well.”
Matthews’s stellar batting display featured 19 boundaries, and her sixth ODI century was a testament to her class and determination. Despite a late flurry of wickets towards the end of the innings, Matthews’s heroics ensured West Indies Women posted a daunting total.
In pursuit of the target, Pakistan Women faltered early, losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite valiant efforts from Muneeba Ali and Aliya Riaz, Pakistan Women struggled to build partnerships and succumbed to the relentless pressure exerted by the West Indies bowling attack.
