West Indies T20 campaign kicks off with fresh leadership and strategic squad changes

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled the squads for two pivotal T20 International series this June — three matches against England from June 6 to 10, followed by three encounters against Ireland from June 12 to 15.

The announcement marks a new chapter as Shai Hope steps in as the newly appointed T20 captain, leading a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers.

Hope’s leadership begins amidst an electric atmosphere, bolstered by the return of stalwart Jason Holder, who last donned the West Indies colors in the shortest format early last year. Holder’s experience will be invaluable as the team faces a tough England side in the first leg of the tour.

Star players return, key absences noted

Andre Russell makes a much-anticipated comeback for the England leg after recovering from an injury sustained in last year’s series in Barbados. However, Russell’s participation is limited to the England matches only. Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran, fresh from an intense Indian Premier League campaign, has requested rest for both series to recharge.

The squad will see Test captain Roston Chase depart after the England T20Is to join his red-ball teammates in Barbados for preparations ahead of the crucial three-Test series against Australia for the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy. Chase’s exit paves the way for exciting fresh talent.

New blood and strategic changes for Ireland series

Brandon King will step away from the Ireland leg, creating space for Jyd Goolie, a standout performer in the inaugural West Indies Breakout League and a former ICC Under-19 World Cup player, to earn his first senior team call-up as Chase’s replacement. In-form batter Keacy Carty also joins the Ireland squad, adding firepower and depth.

On the coaching front, Head Coach Daren Sammy and his assistants Floyd Reifer and Ravi Rampaul will transition to the Test Series Camp after the England series, as Sammy prepares for his first assignment as Test head coach. Their departure opens the door for the highly experienced Rayon Griffith to lead the Ireland matches, supported by assistant Donovan Miller.
