In a demoralizing defeat, the West Indies faced an 83-run loss to hosts and world champions Australia in the second One-Day International (ODI), giving Australia an unbeatable 2-0 lead in their three-match series.
Sean Abbott, named the Player of the Match, played a crucial role in Australia’s victory. After scoring 69 runs in the Australian innings, he followed up with a spell of three for 40 from his allotted 10 overs, making it a dominant performance.
Chasing a target of 259 runs to win, the West Indies were bowled out for 175 in 43.3 overs. While Keacy Carty top-scored with 40, and captain Shai Hope contributed 29, the rest of the batting line-up couldn’t mount a serious challenge. Pacer Josh Hazlewood took three wickets for 43 runs from eight overs.
Early wickets dent West Indies’ chances
The West Indies stumbled to 40 for three during the first Power Play as Alick Athanaze, Justin Greaves, and Kjorn Ottley fell cheaply. However, Hope and Carty managed to stabilize the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 53 runs.
Australia bowled with precision, and their fielding was sharp throughout the match. The West Indies failed to find a way to score more freely, struggling against the Australian bowlers.
Abbott’s batting heroics rescued Australia as he scored 63 runs from 63 balls, including one four and four sixes, to bolster the home team’s innings. His performance was crucial in pushing Australia past 250 runs on a challenging pitch.
Positive signs for West Indies’ bowling
Despite the loss, West Indies bowled with discipline and had Australia struggling at 167 for seven in the 35th over before Abbott’s counter-attacking innings. Gudakesh Motie was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of three for 28 from his 10 overs.
With an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, Australia has already secured victory. The West Indies will aim to avoid a clean sweep in the final ODI, which will be contested Tuesday at Manuka Oval in Canberra, Australia.
Despite the challenging series, West Indies’ captain Shai Hope remains optimistic and emphasizes the importance of winning at least one game in the series.
