Two distinguished West Indian cricket umpires, Nigel Duguid and Patrick Gustard, have been appointed to officiate in the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup, set to commence in Bloemfontein, South Africa next Friday.
This youth cricket extravaganza will run until February 11 and will feature teams from around the world competing for the prestigious title.
Nigel Duguid, aged 54, has established himself as an experienced and respected umpire in international cricket. He has previously officiated in one Test match, 15 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 44 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Duguid has also served as a television umpire in 36 senior men’s international matches, showcasing his proficiency in match officiation.
Patrick Gustard, aged 52, joins Duguid as a fellow West Indian umpire selected for this prestigious tournament. While he has not officiated in a Test match or a men’s ODI, Gustard brings his extensive experience in T20Is, having officiated in 29 matches in this format. He has also served as a TV official in nine international matches, further contributing to his credentials as a capable umpire.
Platform for emerging cricket talents
The ICC Under-19 World Cup is a significant event in the ICC calendar and provides a platform for emerging cricket talents to make their mark on the international stage. For many young players participating in this tournament, it represents their first opportunity to compete on the global cricket scene.
Sean Easey, the ICC’s Manager of Umpires and Referees, emphasized the importance of this event not only for aspiring cricketers but also for the development of umpires. He expressed confidence in the diverse and motivated team of international match officials appointed for the tournament and wished them success throughout their tenure in South Africa.
The West Indies Under-19 team, winners of the tournament eight years ago, will compete in Group B, facing formidable opponents such as South Africa, England, and Scotland. Their campaign begins with a clash against the host nation, South Africa, at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom next Friday.
