PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The Windward Islands Volcanoes clinched an extraordinary one-wicket victory against the Guyana Harpy Eagles in their CG United Super50 Cup opener on Tuesday night at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
In a nail-biting encounter that went down to the wire, the Volcanoes’ lower-order heroics ultimately secured the win with just three balls left.
The Harpy Eagles set an imposing target, amassing 274-5 in their allotted 50 overs. Captain Tevin Imlach anchored the innings with a confident 65 off 67 balls, while Keemo Paul’s explosive 54 off 25 deliveries – featuring six sixes and a boundary – gave the Eagles a powerful finish. Solid contributions from Tagenarine Chanderpaul (49) and Kevlon Anderson (42) helped keep the scoreboard ticking. Shadrack Descarte stood out for the Volcanoes’ bowlers, taking 2-53 from his eight overs.
Early trouble
In response, the Volcanoes found themselves in early trouble, reeling at 58-5 by the 12th over. However, an 81-run partnership between Descarte and wicketkeeper Dillon Douglas revived their chase. Descarte’s spirited 60 off 62 balls, peppered with seven fours and a six, provided momentum before he fell in the 26th over.
Douglas, playing just his second List A match, carried the Volcanoes forward with a determined 90 off 100 balls, hitting eight boundaries and two sixes. His tenacity kept the Volcanoes within reach until he was dismissed in the 43rd over at 223, leaving the lower order to finish the job.
Darel Cyrus contributed a crucial 29, but when he was dismissed, the Volcanoes still needed 30 runs with just over four overs left. Kenneth Dember (20 off 18 balls) and Gilon Tyson (17 off 13 balls) held their nerve, guiding the team to a remarkable victory with three balls to spare. Nial Smith led the Harpy Eagles’ bowling efforts with 3-46, while Kevin Sinclair took 2-66.
