Despite the dramatic turn of events, the Miami Heat emerged triumphant with a commanding 106-95 victory over the Pelicans.

The altercation began when Pelicans forward Zion Williamson was fouled by Kevin Love, sparking a confrontation between Pelicans forward Naji Marshall and Jimmy Butler. The situation escalated when Marshall placed his hands on Butler’s throat, igniting a melee that drew in other players.

Butler expressed frustration over his ejection

Heat reserve Thomas Bryant, along with Marshall and Jose Alvarado from the Pelicans, were also ejected from the game.

Reflecting on the incident, Butler expressed frustration over his ejection, stating, “I don’t think I should have gotten thrown out of the game. Then (Marshall) came and put his hands on K-Love and that’s how it all escalated.”

Despite Butler’s early exit, he delivered an impressive performance, contributing 23 points and nine rebounds to propel the Heat to victory. Heat center Bam Adebayo led the charge with a team-high 24 points.

Spoelstra downplayed the altercation

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra downplayed the altercation, attributing it to a misunderstanding of the play. “I think Zion slipped on the play when K-Love grabbed him and it looked a lot worse than what it was. And then everybody kind of overreacted,” Spoelstra remarked.

Butler commended his team’s resilience in the face of adversity, particularly in their first game since the All-Star break. He praised their cohesion and determination, emphasizing their readiness to take on any challenge. “Our team is so ready for anything that anybody’s thrown at us. We’re so together, playing some incredible basketball,” Butler remarked after the Heat secured their seventh win in nine games.

Despite the contentious nature of the game, the Miami Heat demonstrated their resilience and unity, prevailing over the Pelicans in a hard-fought victory that showcased their unwavering resolve.
