Supreme Court denies application for injunction, allowing JFF election process to resume

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is moving forward with setting a new election date following Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that denied an application for the continuation of a temporary injunction that had initially halted the proceedings.

“The way is now cleared for us to set the new election date, which will be determined by the board,” said the JFF in a statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

The court rejected the application on the grounds that the applicants, Patricia Garel and Beach Soccer Jamaica, failed to establish their affiliation or membership with the JFF. Consequently, the court determined that there was no serious issue to be tried.

JFF expresses satisfaction with the outcome

“We were always very confident that we would be vindicated because we were above board, we were transparent, we did everything that the constitution said that we ought to have done,” stated JFF president Michael Ricketts, expressing satisfaction with the ruling.

In response, the JFF expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that they are now able to proceed with setting a new election date, to be determined by the board.

The original election date, scheduled for January 14, was postponed due to the court-ordered injunction initiated by Beach Soccer Jamaica, which sought inclusion in the election of JFF officers. The injunction was based on claims of membership outlined in Article 12 of the JFF’s constitution.

Plans to call an emergency meeting

“We’ve had discussions with CONCACAF, we have had discussions with FIFA and what they have said is that once the process would have fallen within the constitution then there is nothing to worry about. We followed the constitutional process. It is legal, legitimate, we have nothing to fear,” Ricketts added, emphasizing the legitimacy of the process.

With the temporary injunction expired, the JFF plans to call an emergency meeting within 14 days to reschedule the elections. Ricketts reiterated the importance of moving forward with the electoral process in a transparent and fair manner.

The JFF’s commitment to upholding constitutional procedures and transparency underscores its dedication to ensuring a democratic and legitimate election process for its leadership.
