Cricket West Indies (CWI) made an official announcement on Thursday, revealing that Shane Dowrich, the seasoned wicket-keeper/batsman, has decided to retire from international cricket with immediate effect.
As a result, he has also withdrawn from the West Indies squad for the upcoming CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series against England.
Dowrich made his debut on the international stage against Australia in Dominica back in 2015. Throughout his career, he participated in 35 Test matches, amassing a total of 1,570 runs, which included three centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 125 against Sri Lanka in Trinidad in 2018. Behind the stumps, he demonstrated his prowess by taking 85 catches and executing five stumpings. Dowrich also made a solitary appearance in a One-Day International (ODI) match in Ireland in May 2019.
CWI expressed its gratitude to Dowrich for his significant contributions to West Indies cricket and extended their best wishes for his future endeavors. Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, acknowledged Dowrich’s dedication, describing him as a disciplined and hard-working cricketer who consistently gave his best both on and off the field.
Bascombe also recalled Dowrich’s memorable Test century on home soil in Barbados in 2019, which played a crucial role in the West Indies’ victory over England and the retention of the Wisden Trophy. Bascombe acknowledged that the decision to retire is a difficult one and respected Dowrich’s choice as he steps away from the international arena.
In light of Dowrich’s retirement, the CWI Selection Panel has opted not to name a replacement for the three-match Series, resulting in a squad of 14 players representing West Indies. The CG United ODI Series will comprise three matches, commencing with two CG United ODIs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday, December 3, and Wednesday, December 6.
The first CG United ODI will be a day game starting at 9:30 a.m., while the second CG United ODI will be a day/night encounter commencing at 1:30 p.m.
The series will then move to Barbados for the third and final CG United ODI, set to take place at Kensington Oval on Saturday, December 9. This match will also be played as a day/night contest and will start at 1:30 p.m.
Fans can secure their tickets in advance, benefiting from cost savings compared to purchasing tickets at the venue box office (the savings are included in the online price). Tickets are available through the Windies Tickets service presented by Mastercard at www.tickets.windiescricket.com.
