Rising fast-bowling star Shamar Joseph has clinched a lucrative deal with Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), worth a staggering US$362,000.
The 24-year-old’s impressive performance on the recent West Indies tour of Australia has earned him this prestigious opportunity to showcase his talent on the global stage.
Joseph’s IPL contract comes as a replacement for England’s Mark Wood, who has been recalled by the England and Wales Cricket Board for upcoming commitments. Joining Lucknow Super Giants, Joseph will form a formidable fast-bowling unit alongside West Indies teammate Kyle Mayers, as well as Afghan Naveen-ul-Haq and Englishman David Willey.
Lucknow Super Giants, who reached the play-offs in the previous IPL season, are looking to bolster their squad with Joseph’s inclusion in a bid to enhance their performance in the upcoming tournament.
Second significant contract for Joseph
This IPL deal marks the second significant contract for Joseph, following his signing with Darren Sammy’s Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League. With his recent exploits in Australia, Joseph has emerged as a promising talent in international cricket, especially after his outstanding performance in the historic Test series against Australia.
During the Test series, Joseph made headlines with a remarkable debut in Adelaide, where he claimed a five-wicket haul despite West Indies’ defeat. He followed this up with a sensational seven-wicket haul in the second Test in Brisbane, leading West Indies to a historic victory on Australian soil after nearly three decades.
Joseph’s remarkable series performance, which saw him capture 13 wickets at an average of 17, has undoubtedly caught the attention of IPL franchises, further validating his potential as a world-class fast bowler.
