Saint Lucia rides the wave to global surfing stage with ISA membership

Cardiff, California – A significant tide has turned in the world of surfing: Saint Lucia, the picturesque island jewel of the Caribbean, has officially joined the International Surfing Association (ISA), becoming the 117th national federation and the 11th member from the Caribbean region.

This milestone marks the dawn of a transformative era for Saint Lucian surfing—a fusion of national pride, international ambition, and deep reverence for the ocean.

Nestled along 158 kilometers of unspoiled, wave-kissed coastline, Saint Lucia has long been a haven for beachgoers and ocean lovers. Now, its potential as a surfing powerhouse is being recognized on a global scale.

“Saint Lucia’s acceptance into the International Surfing Association marks a historic milestone for the island, signifying its official entry onto the global surfing stage,” said Shaid Frank Ambler, President of the Saint Lucia Surfing Association (SLSA).

Waves of opportunity and environmental stewardship

The SLSA is on a mission far greater than competitive success—it seeks to cultivate world-class athletes while championing the preservation of the island’s natural beauty. With surfing intrinsically linked to the health of the ocean, the organization embraces environmental responsibility alongside its athletic pursuits.

Backed by the ISA, the SLSA plans to roll out programs designed to develop local talent, elevate coaching standards, and empower the next generation of surfers, all while emphasizing sustainability and community engagement.

“Becoming a member of the ISA opens new doors for local surfers, coaches, and enthusiasts, ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of surfing in Saint Lucia,” Ambler emphasized. “It provides a platform for international competition, training opportunities, and global recognition.”

A youthful surge

This historic moment aligns perfectly with another remarkable milestone: Saint Lucia is preparing to send its very first junior national surf team to the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship later this year. This symbolic debut promises to showcase the raw talent emerging from the island’s shores, and heralds the start of Saint Lucia’s competitive journey on the international surfing circuit.

With youthful enthusiasm, cultural pride, and waves at their backs, Saint Lucia’s young surfers stand poised to carve their names into the sport’s growing legacy.

Global support, local impact

ISA President Fernando Aguerre expressed his excitement over the newest addition to the ISA family, emphasizing the strategic importance of fostering the sport in regions ripe with natural potential.

“It is so exciting to welcome the beautiful nation of Saint Lucia into the ISA,” Aguerre said. “The growth of surfing throughout the Caribbean has been wonderful to see, and we welcome its continued expansion, especially within such a wave-rich region that holds so much opportunity for surfers across generations and disciplines.”

“Working with grassroots surfing communities in emerging surfing nations like this is integral to the ISA’s mission to create a better world through surfing, and we look forward to seeing the amazing progress over the coming years.”

Surfing toward the horizon

As Saint Lucia rises with the tide of international surfing, its story becomes one of unity, ambition, and deep connection to the sea. This move doesn’t just celebrate the sport; it positions Saint Lucia as a future leader in Caribbean surfing—a beacon for youth, a guardian of coastal heritage, and a proud new voice in the global surfing conversation.

The surfboards are waxed. The waves are waiting. And Saint Lucia is ready to ride.
