As the West Indies head into the final match of their ODI series against Sri Lanka, batsman Sherfane Rutherford is urging his teammates to adopt a more dedicated and disciplined approach at the crease.
Sri Lanka secured the series with a commanding five-wicket win in the second ODI, giving them a decisive 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Despite the team’s overall struggles, Rutherford has consistently been a bright spot for the squad, recording half-centuries in both games and boosting his career ODI average to an impressive 56.50.
Rutherford’s resilience at the crease was evident in his undefeated 74 in the series opener, followed by an 80-run effort in the second match—the highest score of his ODI career to date. The left-handed batter’s consistent performance wasn’t enough to stave off the back-to-back losses, though, as Sri Lanka’s bowlers, particularly their spinners, effectively dismantled the West Indies line-up.
Spending extended time at the crease
Expressing his satisfaction with his personal form, Rutherford acknowledged the need for his fellow batsmen to focus on spending extended time at the crease if they want to be competitive. “I’m grateful for the form I’m in, but as a team, we need to focus on staying at the crease longer,” Rutherford stated. “We’ve got a solid group of players, and I believe we’ll come back stronger. It’s all about finding those singles and capitalizing on scoring chances when they arise.”
Even with the series lost, Rutherford is confident in the team’s determination to finish on a high note. “These guys are eager to show their best in the last match. I know they’re up for the challenge,” he added. Rutherford’s contributions also include his involvement in a record-setting ninth-wicket partnership with Gudakesh Motie during the second game. Together, they posted a 119-run stand—the highest ninth-wicket partnership in West Indies ODI history.
Motie’s unbeaten 50 complemented Rutherford’s aggressive 80 and kept the West Indies in the game longer than expected. Reflecting on Motie’s efforts, Rutherford wasn’t surprised, given their familiarity. “Motie is a solid player; I just encouraged him to back himself, pick the right balls, and not just look to survive but also look to score,” he explained.
