Russia crushes Grenada 5-0 in one-sided friendly

MOSCOW – It was a night of harsh lessons for Grenada as they fell 5-0 to Russia in a dominant display by the hosts at VTB Arena on Wednesday.

Facing the 34th-ranked Russians on their home turf was always going to be an uphill battle for the Caribbean side, ranked 174th in the world.

Early strike sets the tone

Russia wasted little time asserting their superiority, breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute. Danil Prutsev found himself in the right place at the right time, slotting home from close range after a perfectly weighted pass from Lechi Sadulaev. Grenada’s defense, under immense pressure, struggled to contain the relentless Russian attack.

Grenadian goalkeeper Chad Phillip delivered a string of impressive saves, keeping his side in contention for much of the first half. However, Russia’s relentless pressure eventually broke through once more in the 42nd minute when Arsen Adamov capitalized on a corner kick, doubling the lead.

Barely a minute later, Artem Dzyuba etched his name in Russian football history. The 36-year-old forward fired home his team’s third goal, sealing his place as Russia’s all-time top goal scorer. The VTB Arena erupted in celebration, marking a special milestone for the veteran striker.

A second-half onslaught

Hoping to stem the tide, Grenada made a change at halftime, bringing in Jason Belfon to replace Phillip in goal. But the switch did little to slow Russia’s momentum.

Daniil Fomin extended the hosts’ lead in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on Grenada’s defensive struggles. Just six minutes later, Zelimkhan Bakaev added the finishing touch to an already emphatic performance, making it 5-0 and sending the Russian supporters into rapturous applause.

Despite flashes of resilience, Grenada found themselves completely outmatched by Russia’s precision and firepower. The defeat serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that come with competing against higher-ranked opposition on the international stage.
