GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia — What should have been a time of celebration turned into a national tragedy on Monday, as 22-year-old Sherman Augustin, a rising star in Saint Lucian football, was fatally stabbed during Carnival festivities in the Vigie area, just outside the capital city of Castries.
Augustin, who represented Gros Islet District in the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League, was rushed to Owen King European Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His sudden and violent death has left the sporting community reeling and has cast a dark shadow over the island’s most vibrant cultural event.
A bright career cut short
Augustin was more than just a footballer—he was a symbol of hope and ambition for Saint Lucian youth. He proudly donned the national colors on the international stage and also played a vital role in Grenades FC’s championship-winning campaign during the 2022-23 season in Antigua and Barbuda.
In a heartfelt statement, the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League described his passing as “a devastating blow.”
“Sherman was more than a promising footballer; he was a symbol of dedication, talent, and ambition,” the league declared. “His loss is a devastating blow not only to the local football community but to the country.”
The statement went on to honor Augustin’s unwavering passion and dedication to the sport:
“We stand in solidarity with the Gros Islet District League and all those who had the privilege of playing alongside Sherman. His passion for the game and his commitment to excellence will not be forgotten.”
The league also called upon the public to aid law enforcement in seeking justice:
“We urge anyone with information that may assist the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force in their investigation to come forward. Justice must be served for Sherman and his loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
A midfield maestro remembered
Chester Hughes, President of Grenades FC, paid tribute to Augustin’s impact on and off the pitch, recalling his charisma, discipline, and love for life.
“From Castries to the Caribbean stage, Sherman Augustin brought pride, passion, and power to Grenades’ midfield,” Hughes said. “He was a game-changer – helping lead us to our historic 2022-23 league title, stepping up in the CFU Club Shield, and showing true heart every time he wore the Grenades jersey.”
Beyond his football prowess, Augustin was remembered as a vibrant presence in the locker room and at club events.
“He was also the life of the party at club events, a healthy eater, and a true Lucian when it came to celebrating. We honour you, Sherman – and we’re proud to have had you in the Grenades family. Rest in peace, baller.”
A call for justice and reflection
Augustin’s tragic death has sent shockwaves across the Caribbean football community, sparking calls not only for justice but for greater efforts to protect young athletes and address violence during public celebrations.
