Rain rescues Riders after collapse as GSL final nears

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The heavens opened at Providence Stadium and brought an abrupt end to what could have been another dominant display by defending champions Rangpur Riders in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

Instead of celebrating a fourth straight group-stage win, the Riders were forced to settle for a no-result after relentless rain washed out their final preliminary match against the already-eliminated Central Stags on Wednesday.

Drenched hopes and dismal batting

Even before the storm clouds claimed the day, trouble had already begun to brew for the Riders. The rain-affected match was first reduced to 17 overs per side, then cut further to 14, but the real tempest came from the Stags’ bowlers. Exploiting the sodden pitch and heavy atmosphere, the Stags carved through Rangpur’s batting order with ruthless precision.

Rangpur crumbled for a paltry 79 in just 13.5 overs, with only Saif Hasan (22) and Mahidul Islam Ankon (15) managing to reach double figures. It was a stark collapse for a team that had looked nearly invincible over the past week.

Stags leave their mark in final bow

Though already knocked out of playoff contention, the Central Stags ended their tournament on a high note. Their bowling trio—Angus Schaw, Jayden Lennox, and Blair Tickner—each claimed three wickets, orchestrating a clinical dismantling of the Riders’ innings. While the Stags were denied an opportunity to chase down the modest target due to rain, their dominance with the ball left a lasting impression.

A timely escape and eyes on the final

For the Riders, the weather turned from foe to unexpected friend. With the Stags primed to begin their reply, the skies opened up decisively, sparing Rangpur the ignominy of a likely defeat. Still, the sudden halt to their momentum is far from ideal as they prepare to defend their title.

Now, all attention shifts to Friday’s much-anticipated GSL Final, where the Riders will square off against tournament hosts Guyana Amazon Warriors. Both teams have looked formidable throughout the competition, setting the stage for what promises to be a blockbuster finale.
