Player availability concerns loom as Xavier Gilbert assumes interim role for Reggae Girlz

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has unveiled Xavier Gilbert as the interim head coach for the national women’s soccer team, the Reggae Girlz. This announcement – on Thursday -comes as the team prepares for crucial Women’s Gold Cup qualification matches scheduled for the upcoming week.

Gilbert, who previously served as the assistant coach under the tutelage of former head coach Lorne Donaldson, has been entrusted with leading the team during these pivotal fixtures. The Reggae Girlz are set to face off against Panama on October 25 and Guatemala on October 29 in a bid to secure their spot in the Women’s Gold Cup.

The JFF has reported that the squad for these significant encounters has already been finalized, and detailed information regarding the player roster is expected to be disclosed shortly. However, recent reports from TVJ suggest that several players who participated in previous World Cup and Olympic Games qualifiers have made themselves unavailable for these upcoming matches.

Their decision is rooted in concerns related to the coaching staff and unresolved financial matters, including monies and bonuses owed to them by the JFF. Additionally, members of the technical staff have also declined participation due to unpaid financial obligations.

In a proactive move aimed at rallying support for the Reggae Girlz, the JFF has announced a substantial reduction in ticket prices for the match against Guatemala, scheduled to take place at the National Stadium. Grandstand tickets will be available for a modest $3,000, while bleacher tickets will be offered at the affordable rate of $1,000. Students holding valid identification will enjoy a further discount, with entry to the bleachers priced at just $500. Notably, children under the age of 10 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a guardian.
