After his remarkable performance in the second Test against Australia in Brisbane, West Indies fast-bowling sensation, Shamar Joseph, has been signed by Peshawar Zalmi for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign.
This signing comes just 48 hours after Joseph’s standout display in the Test match.
The 24-year-old made his debut for West Indies two weeks ago in Adelaide and has quickly garnered attention for his impressive bowling abilities. Peshawar Zalmi, the 2017 PSL champions, have enlisted Joseph as a partial replacement for England fast bowler Gus Atkinson.
Atkinson had earlier been announced as a replacement for Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad. However, since Atkinson is currently part of England’s tour of India, Joseph was brought in as cover. It is expected that Joseph will stay with the team for the entirety of the PSL, which is scheduled to run from February 17 to March 24.
This decision means that Joseph, who has limited experience in T20 cricket having played only two matches for the champion Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League last year, will have to miss a significant portion of the Cricket West Indies four-day championship, which is set to begin on February 7.
The presence of West Indian talent at Peshawar Zalmi is notable
The presence of West Indian talent at Peshawar Zalmi is notable, as West Indies white-ball head coach Darren Sammy will serve as Zalmi’s head coach for the upcoming PSL season, and Twenty20 captain Rovman Powell is also expected to be part of the squad.
Joseph’s rise to prominence has been swift, with his impressive five-wicket haul on debut in the Adelaide Test, although West Indies ultimately lost the match by 10 wickets. His sensational performance in the second Test at the Gabba, where he claimed seven wickets, played a crucial role in West Indies securing an eight-run victory.
This move to the PSL marks an exciting opportunity for Joseph to gain valuable experience and further establish himself on the global cricketing stage.
