The Eugene Diamond League event promises an exciting contest as two of the sport’s biggest stars prepare to go head-to-head.

Thompson-Herah’s late inclusion in the event has added considerable excitement, with increased interest in her clash with Richardson, who will be competing on home soil. This high-stakes race will also feature world 60m indoor champion Julien Alfred and Africa’s fastest woman, Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, but the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Thompson-Herah and Richardson.

Fond memories of Eugene

Thompson-Herah, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100m and 200m, has fond memories of Eugene. She closed out her 2023 season with a season’s best of 10.79 seconds at this venue. In 2022, she won the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 10.79, following an impressive 10.54 clocking over the distance in 2021.

This will be Thompson-Herah’s first race of the season, as she aims to defend her Olympic title. The Prefontaine Classic will provide her with a crucial early test and a glimpse of the competition she will face in Paris, where Richardson is among her main rivals.

Richardson, on the other hand, has had a challenging start to the season. She finished second in Xiamen and third in Suzhou in the 200m last month. The Prefontaine Classic will mark her first 100m race of 2024, and she will be eager to make a strong impression.

With Thompson-Herah looking to gauge her early-season form and Richardson aiming to kickstart her campaign, the stage is set for a thrilling encounter in Eugene.
