Kingston College’s (KC) speed merchant Bouwahjgie Nkrumie and Hydel High School’s Alana Reid produced record-breaking performances in the 100m finals to pull the curtains down on Wednesday’s second day of the five-day ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships inside Kingston’s National Stadium.

Nkrumie broke the Class One 100m record not once, but twice on the day, with 10.08 seconds in the semi-finals and a breath-taking 9.99 seconds (0.3mps) in the final, while Reid smashed the Girls’ Class One equivalent with a first-ever sub-11-second run with 19.92 seconds in the final.
It was another KC standout, Zharnel Hughes, who now competes for Great Britain at the Olympics and World Championships stage, who held the previous record of 10.12 seconds set back in 2014.

And Reid broke the record of 11.13 seconds set by Jamaican icon Veronica Campbell Brown back in 2001.
Two other records were established on the day, with Jamaica College taking an early lead with 74 points ahead of KC with 61 points after eight events scored.
Edwin Allen High lead with 55 points on the girls’ side, with St Jago High School next on 47 points.
One record fell in the girls’ Class One 1500m with Jodyann Mitchell of Holmwood Technical running 4:29.42 minutes to win ahead of Kishay Rowe of Alphansus Davis High in 4:30.29 minutes and Danielle King of Hydel High in 4:35.57 minutes.
The previous record was set by Natoya Goule with 4:29.81 minutes in 2010, while the fifth record was realised in the Girls’ Class One discus throw where Cedricka Williams of Holmwood Technical threw 57.84m on her first attempt to claim gold.
Second place went to Abigail Martin of St Jago with 53.81m and Camperdown High School’s Britannia Johnson claiming third place with 50.69m.
The stage was set from the semi-finals were contested two hours earlier with the conditions almost perfect for sprinting on a relatively calm evening.
The Kingston College standout, who held the previous National Junior Record with 10.02 seconds for silver at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia, last summer, broke smartly from the blocks and by the halfway stage he was well clear and despite looking over his shoulders left and right, he was still clear at the wire ahead of Deandre Daley of Herbert Morrison (10.14) and Jaiden Reid third in 10.26 seconds.
Reid and Serena Cole were the standouts from the semi-finals of the girls sprint, but Cole, who had looked real ominous in her semi-final win, limped off after the event and did not show up for the final.

Meanwhile, Calabar High School’s Shaquane Gordon won the Class Two 100m final in 10.40 seconds, with Tramaine Todd of STETHS in 10.42 seconds, and Dontae Watson of JC next in 10.72 seconds.
In the girls’ equivalent, Abigail Wolfe of Holy Childhood High won in 11.59 seconds with Shemonique Hazle next in 11.65 and Lavanya Williams in third place in 11.66 seconds.
Nkrumie’s young teammate Joshua Spence won the Class Three 100m final in 10.92 seconds, with Malique Dennis of JC next in 11.01 seconds, and third place going to Shaun Lewis of STETHS in 11:07 seconds.
The Class Three girls 100m final was won by Theianna-Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen won in 11.49 seconds, ahead of Wolmer’s Girls’ Natrece East in 11.59 and Poshanna-Lee Blake of St Jago in third place in 11:89 seconds.
It was a first and second-place finish for Immaculate Conception High School with Kayla Johnson winning in 11:97 seconds ahead of teammate Naje Brown in 12.20 seconds and Gabrielle Morgan in 12.24 seconds.
Thirteen more finals will be up for decision on Thursday, with the main emphasis being on the 400m.
