Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda have solidified their partnership with a shared vision for the development of cricket in the Caribbean.
On October 25, 2023, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda hosted CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow at the Office of the Prime Minister in St. John’s.
During this meeting, key figures such as Daryll Matthew, Minister of Sports, Ricky Skerritt (Chairman of the Coolidge Cricket Ground Board and former CWI President), and Nelecia Yeates (CCG General Manager) were also in attendance.
Commitment to cricket development
The discussions centered on Antigua and Barbuda’s ongoing commitment to cricket development, with a particular emphasis on grassroots cricket, enhancing infrastructure, and hosting international cricket events. Moreover, an updated master development plan for the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) was presented to the government officials, with both parties identifying collaborative opportunities to elevate the existing cricket facility to global standards.
Dr. Shallow, the President of CWI, expressed his optimism about the partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda government, citing their invaluable support in CWI’s acquisition of Coolidge Cricket Ground as the home of West Indies cricket. He acknowledged Prime Minister Browne and his government as crucial partners for the upcoming development phase.
Dr. Shallow also highlighted the significance of Ricky Skerritt’s role as Chairman of CCG, emphasizing his extensive experience and institutional knowledge, which would contribute substantially to the success of the CCG project.
Updated facility design presented
Additionally, the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) Board met on October 24, 2023, at the CWI headquarters at Coolidge, where designers presented an updated facility design. The plan includes a state-of-the-art training facility and incorporates commercial establishments alongside cricket infrastructure.
Prime Minister Browne expressed his delight about the forthcoming international cricket fixtures in Antigua & Barbuda. In December, the first two matches of the CG United One-Day International Series between West Indies and England will be hosted at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Furthermore, Antigua & Barbuda has been named as one of the seven Caribbean host countries for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Antigua has served as the headquarters of CWI for nearly 30 years, reinforcing its pivotal role in the region’s cricketing landscape.
